Polypodium Fern Silk
Ferns are amongst the most ancient inhabitants of sequoia forests of the Pacific coast. If we could speak their language, I imagine we might also consider them amongst the most wise. Their stunning pinnate fronds speak of the balance of light and shadow in the understory. Cheerful yellow sori hold spores patiently until the wind, the rain and fog carry them to new canyons, creeksides, cliffs and crevices. We love ferns for the poetry of their unfurling when the winter rains awaken them – fiddlenecks spiralling outwards with the most tender new green. Can we also love them for the furling back inwards in the dryness of late summer, when they turn back to their own center, and hold tight to their rhizomes in deeper ground. Polypodium scouleri is found from BC to Baja, the genus in existence from over 300 million years ago. This 20”x70” scarf is printed on silk chiffon and has a delicate hand-rolled hem.
