Sand

24”x36”

Eroded manganese garnet from the Santa Lucia Mountains gives the Big Sur Coast its iconic purple sand beaches -- a landscape that is continually reinvented by wind and water.  Sand is a receiver, a mirror of life and change, a champion of subtlety, a truth-teller. Like water it speaks to us in patterns, in a language that has a lifelong hold on me. I must owe so much of my imagination to all the hours I've enjoyed observing sand - from the Great Lakes beaches I grew up on, to the Pacific coast of California
